Dying Africa

In Africa, the authorities of Nigeria, the most populous country on the continent, decreed total confinement in Lagos, a megalopolis of 20 million inhabitants, and in the capital Abuja, starting this Monday night.

To date, this huge nation has recorded nearly a hundred cases, but this number could skyrocket rapidly, Information Minister Lai Mohammed warned Thursday.

Confinement measures arouse much misunderstanding and outrage in sub-Saharan Africa, where much of the population lives on less than two dollars a day and depends on the alternative economy to survive.

In Zimbabwe, hit by two decades of economic and financial crisis, the three-week confinement starting Monday promises to be particularly painful for its 16 million inhabitants.

"Few people can afford a daily meal in normal times," said a resident of the capital, Prince Gwanza. "I am afraid that people will starve when they are isolated at home." AFP
