Ford and GE Healthcare will produce 50,000 inexpensive
respirators in one of the automaker's plants in Michigan in the next 100 days,
according to a plan released Monday.
The automaker will be able to produce 30,000 more
respirators per month once it completes the first batch of 50,000 units.
Production at the Rawsonville, Michigan, plant will begin
the week of April 20. The automaker expects to produce 1,500 units by the end
of April, 12,000 by the end of May, and 50,000 by July 4.
Ford will use 500 employees who have volunteered but will be
paid and who will work three shifts.
The respirator is a modified low-cost model from another
designed by Airon and purchased by GE Healthcare.
The two companies said the respirator Ford will produce in
Rawsonville "uses a design that works on pressurized air without the need
for electricity," which will allow treating many of the COVID-19 patients
who need help breathing.
