Trump closes the doors of the USA to Europeans; the coronavirus continues to advance; China predicts COVID 19 could end in June

Europeans will not be able to enter the United States for at least a month beginning Friday. The surprising measure enacted by Donald Trump sank the stock markets on Thursday and caused rejection from the Old Continent, where the death toll is already close to 1,000 and continues to advance, especially in Italy and Spain.

The measure announced by Trump will not apply to flights from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, but it will apply to all those who have been within the 14 days prior to arrival in the United States in any country in the Schengen area, except for Americans and permanent residents.

The State Department also urged Americans to avoid all foreign travel.

The decision had an immediate effect on the markets, for example on Wall Street, where the transaction interruption mechanism was reactivated after a drop of more than 7% in the S&P 500 after the opening.

The European Union (EU) expressed its displeasure at Trump's words. "The EU disapproves of the fact that ... the travel ban has been unilaterally adopted," said a statement by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and her counterpart to the European Council, Charles Michel.

The European leaders indicated that there is a "world crisis, not limited to any continent and that requires cooperation instead of unilateral action."

Trump justified the unwarranted measure because it "takes time" to notify his peers and "we had to act quickly."

The coronavirus infected more than 127,000 people worldwide and killed more than 4,600 since the outbreak began in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December, according to an AFP count.

Europe is struggling to maintain control over the spread after the virus claimed the lives of nearly 950 people and infected more than 22,000 on the continent.

The situation worsens in Spain with almost 3,000 cases and 84 deaths. Parts of Madrid usually full of tourists such as Puerta del Sol or Gran Vía were less crowded this Thursday. In addition, schools and universities in the capital are closed and shopping is compulsory in supermarkets.
