Brazil probably has 12 times more cases of the new
coronavirus than the government reports, because so few tests are being done
and it takes a long time to confirm the results, according to a study published
Monday.
Researchers from a consortium of Brazilian universities and
institutes examined the proportion of cases that ended in deaths until April
10, considering cases that ended in recovery or death and excluding patients
who are still fighting the virus.
The much higher mortality rate than expected in Brazil,
according to official figures, indicates that there are many more cases of the
virus than are counted, and the study estimates that only 8% of those infected
are reported.
The government has focused on testing serious cases rather
than all suspected cases, said the consortium, known as the Center for Health
and Intelligence Operations, which has also complained about long wait times to
obtain test results.
