Goverment prepare a tax on large fortunes in Argentina to combat COVID-19

The ruling blocs of Argentina's Congress are preparing a bill that sets a one-time tax on large fortunes to finance the health and social campaign against the new coronavirus pandemic, lawmakers reported Monday.

The tribute would apply "to about 200 people and about 200 companies that obtained higher sales," said Hugo Yasky, deputy from the government's Front of All (Peronists and allies), in statements to Radio Con Vos.

President Alberto Fernández imposed mandatory isolation across the country of 44 million inhabitants since March 20, from which only essential services such as food, pharmacies and banks are exempt.

As of Sunday, Argentina registers 2,208 infections and 95 deaths from COVID-19.

"We hope to raise $ 2.5 billion," said Yaski. Argentina was already suffering a recession now exacerbated by the semi-paralysis of the economy with a sharp drop in tax revenues.

Fernández executes an unprecedented program of state stimulus investment for 550,000 million pesos (8,000 million dollars at the exchange rate of the day).

Some 11 million people are signed up to collect an Emergency Family Income (IFE) of 10,000 pesos ($ 150). More than 220,000 companies have called for financial relief to avoid bankruptcy, according to the government.
