During a press conference, U.S. Secretary of State Marco
Rubio directly addressed questions regarding the notification to Congress
concerning a recent decision by his office.
When a reporter asked why all of Congress wasn't informed
beforehand, Rubio clarified that the appropriate notifications were indeed
made. He explained that the so-called "Gang of Eight," the bipartisan
mechanism that receives classified briefings on sensitive national security
matters, was informed, and emphasized that there is no legal requirement to
individually notify all 535 members of Congress before taking action.
The official stressed that Congress has the full authority
to debate, oversee, or vote on any matter it deems relevant, but emphasized
that the law does not require widespread notification in these types of
circumstances. In his argument, he maintained that the procedure followed was
entirely in accordance with the current legal framework.
Furthermore, Rubio highlighted his prior experience as a
member of the G8, noting that he has participated in more briefings in his
current role than during Joe Biden's four years as president. With this, he
sought to reinforce the idea that his administration has maintained consistent
communication through established institutional channels.
Finally, the Secretary of State asserted that his office has
complied with the law “100%” and reiterated its commitment to continue acting
in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
