Washington, D.C. – FBI Director Kash Patel paid tribute to
the victims of Extortion 17, the U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter shot down
on August 6, 2011, in the Tangi Valley, Afghanistan, in what was considered the
deadliest incident for U.S. forces during the war in that country.
The aircraft was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade
launcher (RPG), allegedly fired by Taliban fighters, while participating in a
military operation.
The attack resulted in the deaths of all 38 people on board,
including 30 U.S. military personnel, among them 17 Navy SEALs, as well as
seven Afghan commandos and an interpreter.
On the anniversary of the tragedy, Patel remembered the
sacrifice of the service members and personnel who lost their lives on the
mission, highlighting their service and commitment to the United States.
The downing of Extortion 17 remains one of the most
remembered episodes of the war in Afghanistan and a symbol of the high human
cost the conflict exacted on U.S. forces.
