WASHINGTON—The United States government is tightening its
immigration and visa control policies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned
that foreigners who enter the country as visitors and subsequently engage in
activities that, in the opinion of authorities, threaten U.S. national
interests or security may lose their visas.
“If you enter our country as a visitor and engage in
activities against the national interests, against the national security of the
United States, we will revoke your visa,” Rubio stated.
The warning comes as the State Department confirmed that the
Trump administration has revoked more than 175,000 visas since the beginning of
his second term.
According to U.S. authorities, the cancellations have
primarily affected foreigners involved in crimes, violations of their visa
conditions, immigration fraud, or situations considered threats to national
security.
Among the cases cited by the government are individuals
linked to crimes such as assault, theft, drug possession, driving under the
influence, fraud, and sex offenses. Revocations have also occurred related to
certain activities or expressions deemed contrary to U.S. interests.
This figure represents a sharp increase in the use of visa
revocation as a tool of U.S. immigration policy. According to data cited by
U.S. media, the rate of cancellations far exceeds that recorded during the last
year of Joe Biden's administration.
“A visa is not a right.”
The Trump administration maintains that a visa is a
conditional permit and that the U.S. government retains the power to revoke it
when it considers that the foreigner has violated the conditions of entry or
poses a risk.
