Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump signed an
executive order aimed at curbing so-called "birthright citizenship
tourism," a practice in which pregnant women travel to the United States
so their children can obtain U.S. citizenship at birth.
The measure seeks to strengthen controls on the entry of
people who, according to the federal administration, travel with the primary
purpose of giving birth in the United States to access the benefits of birthright
citizenship.
According to the White House, the order instructs the
relevant federal agencies to implement mechanisms to identify and discourage
this type of practice, within the framework of the government's immigration
policies.
This decision is part of a series of actions taken by the
Trump administration to tighten immigration policies and strengthen border
controls. However, the order is expected to significantly reduce the number of
children born in the country, whose citizenship is protected by the Fourteenth
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but who have no other connection to the
country except that their mothers were "tourists" while they were
born.
To date, details regarding the implementation of the measure
and its timeline for taking effect have not been released.
