Trump Warns About Abdulrahman El-Sayed: “If guys like him get into power, they’ll destroy this country”

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump issued a warning about Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Michigan, stating that his election would pose a threat to the United States.

Referring to the Democratic politician, Trump questioned his performance, saying, “He talks well. I’ve seen better.” He then hardened his message, stating, “But let me tell you something: if guys like him get into power, they’ll destroy this country.”

The comments come after El-Sayed won the Democratic primary in Michigan and became his party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate seat.

Trump had previously criticized El-Sayed, particularly for his political positions and his stance on filibustering in the Senate. The president has warned Republicans about the consequences of a potential Democratic victory in Michigan.

The race for Michigan's Senate seat thus begins with a particularly confrontational tone, with Trump using his platform to warn against the Democratic candidate and mobilize the Republican electorate ahead of the November elections.

El-Sayed, a physician and former Michigan public health official, represents a left-leaning faction within the Democratic Party. His candidacy has made the race one of the political contests that could attract the most national attention during the upcoming election cycle.
