WASHINGTON—U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated that his country does not maintain an “open borders” policy and maintained that it is up to the U.S. government to determine who can legally enter and remain in the country.
In statements related to immigration
policy and visa revocations, Landau emphasized that the United States has the
authority to decide who is considered welcome in the country.
“We don’t have open borders; we decide
who is welcome in our country,” the official stated.
The statement reflects the U.S.
administration’s position of maintaining greater control over the entry of
foreigners and using available immigration tools to restrict the entry of
people who, in the opinion of the authorities, do not meet the established requirements.
Visa revocation can prevent a person
from traveling to the United States even if they previously had authorization
to enter. The measure could have significant consequences for foreigners who
study, work, conduct business, or maintain undesirable family ties in that
country.
The undersecretary's message makes
Washington's position clear: immigration policy will be determined by the U.S.
government, not by those seeking entry.
