More than 100,000 people have reportedly signed a petition
asking New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani not to attend the 9/11 commemorations
at Ground Zero.
The petition states that relatives of victims of the 2001
terrorist attacks have asked the mayor to stay away from the site of the former
World Trade Center.
The initiative has sparked intense debate on social media
about Mamdani's presence at the 9/11 commemorations and the new mayor's
relationship with the victims' families.
However, the number of signatures on an online petition and
the claims circulating on social media should be distinguished from an official
request from the victims' families or a formal decision regarding the mayor's
participation in the ceremony.
Although it remains the decision of thousands of New Yorkers
who are not interested in seeing the mayor at the 2026 commemorative events.
Ground Zero is one of the main sites commemorating the attacks of September 11,
2001, which left nearly 3,000 dead in the United States.
