CALIFORNIA— Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton intensified his criticism of the state's political and economic direction, warning that some business owners are considering leaving California if Democrats retain political control of Sacramento after the November elections.
In a message released Thursday, Hilton stated that business
owners repeatedly express their intention to leave the state if current
policies implemented in the California capital continue.
"Business owners tell me every day that if the
Sacramento one-party machine wins again in November, they're leaving," Hilton
said.
The Republican linked this anticipated business exodus to
problems such as poverty, unemployment, and the high cost of living, blaming
them on policies implemented for years by Democratic administrations.
Hilton also launched attacks against his Democratic rival,
Xavier Becerra, whom he accused of maintaining the same policies that,
according to his campaign argument, have contributed to the deterioration of
the state's economic conditions.
"Becerra will put his rubber stamp on the same destructive
policies and corrupt schemes while hardworking Californians are crushed,"
Hilton asserted.
The statements come just weeks before the November 3, 2026,
gubernatorial election, in which Hilton and Becerra will vie to succeed
Governor Gavin Newsom.
The cost of living is among the top concerns of
Californians. A survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found that
inflation, the cost of living, and housing prices were among the top issues
cited by voters.
Furthermore, an analysis published in September by the
California Budget & Policy Center, based on Census data, placed
California's poverty rate at 17.3% by 2025, among the highest in the nation.
