As Plato recounts in the Phaedo, Socrates' final words were not a solemn farewell, but a seemingly trivial request to Crito: to remind him that he owed a rooster to Asclepius. However, this gesture holds a profound symbolic meaning. Asclepius, the god of medicine, received offerings from those he healed, and Socrates seems to suggest that death is not a misfortune, but a kind of definitive cure: the liberation of the soul from the body. Thus, his last words express gratitude for having been "healed" from bodily life and reaffirm his conviction that the soul is more valuable than physical existence.
