Africa is preparing for confinement, already in force in
Rwanda and Mauritius and imposed this Monday in Lubumbashi, the economic
capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to face the coronavirus
in an unfavorable material and cultural context.
Activity in Lubumbashi - headquarters of the DRC's mining
economy - and its four million inhabitants stopped this Monday for 48 hours, by
order of the provincial authorities.
The reason: two passengers from Kinshasa tested positive for
the covid-19 when they got off a regular flight with 77 people.
Some 30 cases have been officially declared since March 10
in the DRC - with two deaths - all in the capital of 10 million inhabitants.
Four deputies have asked "to quarantine Kinshasa and
isolate it from the rest of the country" to prevent the spread of the
virus to the territory of this nation of 2.3 million km2 and at least 80
million inhabitants.
A meeting on the coronavirus is scheduled for Monday
afternoon in the DRC presidency.
In West Africa, the presidents of Senegal, Macky Sall, and
the Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, could announce new measures on Monday,
after the one already adopted (closure of borders and public places, among
others)
