For the first time in the millennial history of the Catholic
Church, the Pope prayed this Friday alone in front of the immense empty square
of San Pedro and urged the world to “row together” against the coronavirus
pandemic.
On a rainy afternoon and accompanied by the ringing of the
bells and the siren of the ambulances, the pope made a historic gesture by
imparting the blessing and plenary indulgence to the entire world for the
terrible pandemic that plagued him.
"Sir, do not abandon us," the Pope pleaded,
speaking of an "unexpected and furious storm", of "a storm that
unmasks our vulnerability and exposes those false and superfluous
securities," he said.
During the unpublished rite, which included the blessing
"Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) to all the faithful,
broadcast on television, internet and radio at 6:00 p.m. Rome time, 5:00 p.m.
GMT, the pope called to "row together".
"We are all in the same boat and we are called to row
together," he said, inviting "to activate solidarity, capable of
making sense in these hours when everything seems to be shipwrecked," he
emphasized.
The global blessing allows more than 1.3 billion Catholics
to obtain a plenary indulgence, that is, the forgiveness of their sins, at such
a difficult time, with confinement measures that affect more than 3,000 million
people.
