Uruguay will temporarily lower public wages and pensions due to coronavirus




The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced this Thursday a two-month reduction in retirements and salaries for public officials to create a fund to cover the expenses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We want to announce the creation of the Coronavirus Fund to continue dealing with outlays, which are going to be many (...) income of public officials, because it is time for all of us to make an effort, ”said the president at a press conference.
Lacalle Pou explained that 20% will be deducted from his own salary, as well as from the salaries of ministers, legislators and directors of state entities.

Likewise, on scales that "will surely go from 5% to 10% and 20%", public wages and pensions that exceed 80,000 liquid pesos (about $ 1,900) will be reduced.

"They are high wages, they are not people who have to stop the pot," justified the president.
