The good weather this weekend in France and the 20 days of confinement
dangerously increased the temptation to go out for a walk, so the authorities
and medical personnel had to remember the ultimate hack: "Stay home."
Paris, early Sunday afternoon. On the banks of the
Saint-Martin canal, several couples walk hand in hand, among sweaty corridors.
A man rests on a bench, his head bowed to the sun. Two
friends meet. "I haven't seen anyone in twenty days, let's talk keeping
our distance," says one of them.
Is confinement taken less seriously? "A little,"
admits Mathieu, sitting near the water with his daughter and his partner, who
is walking for the "first time" since measures were put in place to
stop the spread of COVID-19.
"Although, in reality, we don't really relax." The
family has made a one-hour trip a few steps from their home. "We respect
the law," they explain, referring to the rules set by the French
government to allow, within confinement, a minimum number of outlets to buy or
take air.
