The coronavirus has killed 630 people in the past 24 hours
in New York state, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday, in the darkest day yet
in the area of the United States most affected by the pandemic.
The respiratory virus has caused the death of 3,565 people
in the state. The situation is particularly troubling on Long Island, east of
New York City, where the number of cases "is like a fire" spreading,
Cuomo said at a press conference.
Home to New York, which is home to bustling mountain farms
stretching from the bustling Manhattan to the Canadian border, New York could
be a week away from the worst level of the health crisis that has killed some
60,000 people worldwide.
"We are not on the cusp yet, we are getting closer ...
Our reading of the projections is that we will be in a seven-day range,"
Cuomo said. "It's only been 30 days since our first case (...) It feels
like a lifetime."
The United States has the highest number of recorded cases
of COVID-19, the flu-like illness caused by the coronavirus. More than 300,000
people have tested positive in the country and about 8,100 died, according to
the Reuters count.
