The planet was fast approaching one million
coronavirus-infected and 50,000 dead on Wednesday, as the United States
recorded the youngest known victim, a six-week-old baby.
When governments expand containment orders affecting half
the planet, international agencies warned that some parts of the world may face
food shortages if authorities do not navigate the crisis correctly.
More than 900,000
cases have been accounted for worldwide, and almost 46,000 people have died
since the virus emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, according
to an AFP count based on official figures.
"In the next few days, there will be a million confirmed
cases and 50,000 deaths," said the director-general of the World Health
Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Concern is growing in the United States, which has already
counted more than 200,000 infections and at least 4,600 deaths, according to
Johns Hopkins University.
