Americans were called to prepare to face "two very
painful weeks" by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which could take as
many as a quarter of a million victims across the country, as deaths skyrocket
at European hot spots in Spain, France and Great Britain.
The death of 865 people in 24 hours led to the death toll in
the United States exceeding 3,870 on Tuesday, according to the Johns Hopkins
University count.
With this marked acceleration, the daily balance in that
country approached the level of Italy and Spain, while the peak of the
pandemic, which is looming in those two European nations, is not yet in sight
in the United States.
"I want all Americans to be ready for the very difficult
days ahead," President Donald Trump said Tuesday at the White House.
"It will be two very, very painful weeks."
Members of the government-run special pandemic
team released a bleak forecast of 100,000 to 240,000 deaths in the United
States in the coming months, if current restrictions are respected. If no
action were taken, they said, the deaths would be between 1.5 and 2.2 million.
