Moscow—Health concerns in Siberia increased on Tuesday after Russian media reported the death of a second person allegedly linked to the case that has authorities in the Irkutsk region under close surveillance.
According to these reports, the person died in a local
hospital, and the cause was linked to a possible plague infection. However, the
death has not been publicly confirmed by Russian health authorities, so the
alleged second case remains without independent verification.
The situation began to generate concern after the death, on
October 2, of Daria Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee of the Irkutsk Plague
Research Institute. She developed severe pneumonia and died after being
hospitalized.
Although some reports suggested she may have contracted
pneumonic plague, Russian authorities have stated that she was officially
diagnosed with "pneumonia of unknown etiology" and that no case of
plague has been confirmed in the city to date.
The case prompted authorities to locate and monitor
individuals who had contact with the first deceased person. According to
information reported to the World Health Organization (WHO), tests conducted on
these contacts have not detected any dangerous pathogens, and their medical
monitoring has concluded.
