Violence and riots hit Bordeaux schools amid student protests in France

Bordeaux, France—Student protests sweeping across France have led to renewed violence in Bordeaux, with blockades, clashes with security forces, and arson near schools.

The southwestern French city is among the areas where the demonstrations have become most intense. Barricades and confrontations have been reported in recent days, while authorities have reinforced the police presence to contain the unrest.

On September 29, a firefighter was injured while battling a fire at a barricade near the Lycée Montaigne. According to the Gironde Prefecture and the Bordeaux Academy, an aerosol can placed on the fire caused an explosion that injured the firefighter.

On Thursday, tensions escalated again. Demonstrations took place outside various schools in the city, while security forces responded to violent incidents. The French press also reported the use of mortars during the clashes in Bordeaux.

The riots are part of a nationwide mobilization that began with student protests related to teacher shortages, the condition of schools, school hours, and funding for public education. As the days passed, some protests escalated into fires, property damage, and clashes with police.

Fires have also broken out at educational institutions in other French cities. In Nantes, for example, a fire destroyed part of the entrance to a high school, while attacks on public infrastructure and emergency services have been reported in other locations.
