The leader of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, stated that immigrant protests have devolved into organized riots and held La France Insoumise politically responsible for fueling the mobilization.
The growing wave of student and migrant protests sweeping
across France heightened political tensions on Thursday after Marine Le Pen
demanded the passage of new legislation against riots and accused sectors of La
France Insoumise (LFI) of participating in the escalation of violence.
"These are no longer student protests," Le Pen
asserted, claiming they are "riots organized by professionals" and
pointing to the alleged participation of LFI members of parliament in the
blockades and demonstrations.
The National Rally leader called for participation in riots
to be specifically defined as a crime through a new "anti-riot law,"
arguing that current provisions leave gray areas that make it difficult to
punish those who participate in violent acts.
His statements come as the protests, which began with
demands related to the state of public education, have escalated into clashes,
fires, damage to facilities, and assaults in various parts of the country.
According to figures released Thursday by French
authorities, 65 education workers and 170 students had been injured, while
security forces also reported hundreds of officers injured. In addition, the
Interior Ministry reported 1,949 arrests related to the protests.
