Jacqueline Medina, Lizbeth Medina’s mother, asked attendees at a political rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, to remember her daughter, who was murdered in Texas in December 2023, when they go to vote.
During the event, headlined by President Donald Trump, Medina
thanked the president for his support and addressed voters directly: “When you
vote, remember my daughter’s name: Lizbeth Medina. Her life mattered.”
Lizbeth was 16 years old and a member of her school’s
cheerleading squad in Edna, Texas. Her mother found her body in the bathtub of
their home after the teenager failed to appear at a Christmas parade in which
she was scheduled to participate.
Rafael Govea Romero, a Mexican citizen whose visa had
expired, was arrested for the crime. In September 2025, he pleaded guilty to
murder and aggravated robbery and received two concurrent life sentences.
The case resurfaced in the political debate on immigration
during Trump's rally in Nebraska, where the president also urged his supporters
to participate in the upcoming elections.
For Jacqueline Medina, however, the message was focused on
keeping her daughter's memory alive and demanding that her death not be
forgotten when exercising the right to vote, especially considering the
excellent work President Trump is doing on the issue of undocumented
immigration.
"Her life mattered," the mother insisted to the
attendees.
