Moscow—Amid international concern over the death of a worker at a plague research institute in Siberia, Russia offered assistance to the United States on Tuesday to combat outbreaks of infectious diseases, including measles.
The announcement was made by Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian
agency responsible for health and epidemiological protection, after President
Donald Trump expressed Washington's willingness to help Moscow in light of the
situation in the Irkutsk region.
The Russian agency stated that it is prepared to provide the
United States with specialists, laboratory equipment, and diagnostic and preventative
tools. It added that these resources could also serve to revive bilateral
cooperation on health protection against infectious threats.
Rospotrebnadzor justified its offer by noting that the
measles situation has deteriorated in some U.S. states in recent weeks. He also
referenced other infectious diseases recorded during 2026.
The exchange of offers of assistance comes as Washington
seeks more information about the death of a 28-year-old worker at a plague
research institute in Irkutsk. The woman died after developing pneumonia of
undetermined origin.
Although various reports have raised the possibility of
pneumonic plague, Russian authorities have not confirmed a case of plague.
Rospotrebnadzor reported that tests found no microorganisms
related to the deceased woman's work and that no cases of plague have been
detected among those who had contact with her.
