YEMEN—The Saudi-backed Yemeni government is preparing for a large-scale military operation aimed at retaking territories held by the Houthis, in a renewed effort to shift the balance of power in a conflict that has plagued the region for years.
According to reports, the potential offensive involves the
mobilization of more than 100,000 Yemeni troops, who would receive air support
from Saudi Arabia. If launched, it would be one of the most significant
military operations undertaken by forces aligned with the Yemeni government in
recent years.
One of the main strategic objectives would be Bab el-Mandeb,
the strait connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's most
important maritime routes. Its location makes this area a point of immense
military, commercial, and geopolitical value.
Control of Bab el-Mandeb would not only have consequences
for Yemen's internal conflict. Any change in the military situation around the
strait could directly impact international maritime traffic, particularly in a
region already suffering disruptions and threats against commercial vessels.
The offensive would also pose a new challenge for the
Houthis, who maintain control of large areas of northern and western Yemen and
have built significant military capabilities over the years. An operation of
this magnitude could trigger particularly intense clashes and increase the risk
of a new regional escalation.
For Saudi Arabia, supporting the Yemeni government forces
also serves national security interests. The war in Yemen has had direct
repercussions on Saudi territory and the security of its borders, while the
Houthi presence and military capabilities remain a source of concern for
Riyadh.
