The coronavirus has already claimed more than 1,000 deaths
in Spain, where several emergency services are overwhelmed by an epidemic that
grew exponentially in a week and totaled almost 20,000 cases in the country on
Friday.
"The worst days are coming", as the country
approaches "the maximum point", warned the Minister of Health,
Salvador Illa.
The tension of the system is such that the authorities of
the Madrid region announced that, together with the Military Emergency Unit
(UME), they will set up a hospital with 5,500 hospital beds and intensive care
in IFEMA, a gigantic congress hall of the capital.
Spain totaled 19,980 cases on Friday - 16.5% more than
Thursday - and 1,002 deaths, 30% more than 24 hours before, according to
government data.
But above all, the number of fatalities has multiplied by
ten in seven days. Spain is now the third country in the world with more cases,
which can be explained by its greater capacity than others to carry out tests.
The most distressing situation occurs in the Madrid region,
which concentrates just over a third of cases, and 628 deaths, 63% of the
total.
