Coronavirus is already a pandemic and WHO warns that cases will rise

The coronavirus epidemic has already reached the category of pandemic, as determined today by the WHO, which has indicated that for the moment 118,000 affected and 4,291 deaths have been recorded, figures that are expected to increase in the coming days.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said today that the coronavirus causing COVID-19 can already be defined as a "pandemic", after the number of affected cases outside of China has multiplied by 13 in two weeks and in that period affected countries have tripled.

Italy, the second country in the world with the most affected after China, has once again presented very pessimistic figures, since the deceased has risen to 827, an increase of 196 compared to yesterday, Tuesday, while the positive cases are 10,590 and 1,045 people have already been cured, according to the head of the Italian Civil Protection, Angelo Borrelli.



The Italian government approved today to allocate funds of up to 25,000 million euros to face the social and economic consequences of the coronavirus crisis.

The Italian Minister of Economy, Roberto Gualtieri, announced that he has already sent the European Commission a request for borrowing of 20,000 million euros.

After Italy, Spain is the second European country with the most reported cases of coronaviruses, 2,128, and almost 50 deaths, according to the Spanish Ministry of Health.

The first great popular festival of this spring, the Fallas de Valencia, which every March brings together thousands of people in that city in eastern Spain, were suspended yesterday and the future of celebrations such as Easter and Seville Fair, to be held in April.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast today that the Spanish economy will deepen its expected slowdown in 2020, with growth of less than 1.6% forecast in January, due to the impact of the coronavirus and called for "extraordinary temporary measures."

"China is preparing to send a team of medical experts to Italy to help with the prevention and control of the epidemic," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Wednesday.

At the moment there are 16,145 infected people in Chinese territory, including 4,492 in serious condition, and another 285 patients suspected of having contracted the virus.

The total figures are already 3,158 dead among the 80,778 infected diagnosed so far. Of these, 61,745 have been successfully cured.
