After having done everything possible to prevent it, the
Iranian authorities seem to resign themselves to imposing quarantine or
confinement measures to try to stop the advance of the new coronavirus, which
already leaves more than 2,000 dead in Iran.
With almost 30,000 infected, according to official figures,
which are increasing day by day, Iran is one of the countries hardest hit by
the COVID-19 pandemic, along with Spain, Italy and China.
Until now, the government has resisted imposing confinement
or quarantine measures, as many countries have done, saying they fear that this
would cause a disaster for the national economy, already extremely fragile due
to sanctions by the United States.
“Quarantine was something that was done before the First
World War, in the era of cholera and plague. The Chinese themselves are not
very satisfied, ”a deputy health minister, Iraj Harirchi, declared on February
24, 24 hours before it was announced that he himself had been infected.
Instead, authorities asked residents to stay "as much
as possible" in their homes, ensuring that there was no need to get to the
point of some European countries taking police measures to prohibit people from
moving.
But this Wednesday, in the Council of Ministers, President
Hasan Rohani announced the prompt application of "new restrictions",
"difficult for the people."
