Georgia Governor Brian Kemp enacted state election reform
that includes new restrictions on voting by mail and greater legislative
control over how elections are conducted.
Democrats and voting rights groups say the law will
disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color. It is part of a wave of
GOP-backed election bills introduced in states across the country after alleged
fraud by former President Donald Trump led to his defeat in the 2020 election.
The changes to the voting laws in Georgia follow a record
turnout that led to Democratic victories in the presidential race and two
re-elections to the US Senate in the once reliably red state.
Kemp signed the bill less than 2 hours after it received
final approval in the Georgia General Assembly.
