The confirmation of Dr. Levine as the US undersecretary of
health is hailed by LGBTQ rights groups as a "historic" victory.
The United States Senate has confirmed Dr. Rachel Levine as
undersecretary of health, making her the first openly transgender federal
official to win body confirmation.
Wednesday's 52-48 vote ran along party lines and two
Republicans joined Democrats in support of Levine, who previously served as the
top health official in the state of Pennsylvania.
