Irish
politician Hermann Kelly has once again found himself at the center of public
debate after delivering a speech in which he contrasted the positions of some
left-wing groups regarding the conflict in the Middle East with the debate on
national identity in Ireland.
During his
address, Kelly argued that there is a contradiction in the way certain
political groups defend the Palestinians' right to their land, but react
differently when similar slogans are used in reference to Ireland. In this
context, he stated that "the left is happy to say 'Palestine belongs to
the Palestinians'... but if we say 'Ireland belongs to the Irish,' they start
crying."
The
politician concluded his message by reiterating his position on national
identity with an emphatic declaration: "So let's say it clearly: Ireland
belongs to the Irish!"
The exchange
reflects a theme that has gained traction in various European countries, where
discussions about national identity, immigration policies, and multiculturalism
have become central to political debate.
In Ireland,
as in other nations on the continent, these issues continue to generate
conflicting positions between the minority that promotes greater openness to
immigration and the millions who advocate for strengthening policies that
protect national identity and interests.
