BERLIN, GERMANY—Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel
championed an open policy toward migrants during her time in office and, in a
March 6, 2016 interview, called on German citizens, including those of migrant
origin, to unite against the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Now, the political landscape has shifted: the AfD has won
the election, a victory considered historic and reflecting the party's growing
influence in German politics.
The result represents a significant reversal of the
positions Merkel advocated for years and once again places migration and
Germany's political future at the heart of the national debate.
