FLORIDA – Members of the Muslim community in Florida have
expressed their opposition to a possible ban on cousin marriage promoted by
Governor Ron DeSantis.
Those who oppose the measure maintain that this type of
union is part of some cultural and religious traditions, and therefore consider
that prohibiting it would constitute an act of discrimination against Muslims.
“Cousin marriage is part of our culture. To prohibit it
would be Islamophobia. We would have to leave Florida!” said members of the
community.
The proposal has generated debate about the boundaries
between marriage laws, cultural traditions, and religious freedom in the United
States.
