Scott Bessent Prepares Tax Audit of Left-Linked Organizations in the United States

The Treasury Department, headed by Scott Bessent, is reportedly preparing audits that could result in the loss of tax benefits, fines, and retroactive tax payments for three supposedly non-profit organizations.

WASHINGTON—The administration of President Donald Trump, which is working intensively to combat the corruption it inherited, is reportedly preparing a tax audit of three high-profile U.S. organizations: the Open Society Foundations, linked to investor George Soros; the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR); and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

According to information published by The New York Post on August 27, 2026, officials from the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are analyzing measures to review these institutions' compliance with tax obligations and determine whether they continue to qualify to maintain their tax-exempt status.

The reviews could result, if violations are found and in accordance with applicable legal procedures, in the revocation of the tax exemption, civil penalties, and the payment of taxes corresponding to prior periods.

The scope of the measures has not yet been publicly defined. Available reports indicate that the authorities are developing a review framework, but do not confirm that the three organizations have lost their tax status or that there is a final ruling against them at this time.
