The president of Colombia, Iván Duque, said he has reported that hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan immigrants and refugees who live irregularly in the country, will be able to access the regularization of their stay in Colombia.
Duque said that the intention is to grant legal residence
permits to Venezuelans living illegally in Colombia. With this change in their
residence status, the beneficiaries will be able to access rights such as
medical service and the opportunity to freely employ themselves.
The benefits for those living irregularly in Colombia is
that they will now be eligible to obtain residence permits for 10 years, while
immigrants with temporary residence will be able to extend their stay,
President Duque reported.
Duque also indicated that the registration of these
immigrants and refugees would benefit Colombian security agencies and make the
provision of social services more efficient, including vaccination efforts
against the coronavirus.
