Wisconsin mask use decree annulled

The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Gov. Tony Evers's decree on the use of face masks in the state on Wednesday, saying the Democrat exceeded his authority by unilaterally extending the order for months through a series of emergency measures.

The 4-3 ruling by the conservative-dominated court is the most recent legal stumbling block in Evers's attempts to combat the coronavirus. Republican lawmakers voted to overturn the Masks Act in February, after which Evers reissued it.

In May of last year, the court struck down Evers' order to stay home, saying his health secretary lacked sufficient authority for such an order. Evers' efforts to limit the seating of bars, restaurants and other indoor venues were also blocked by a state appeals court in October.
